Description

I wanted to convey the calm, smoky (incense & candles) atmosphere of the temple. You'll have to trust me that the full version is much better than the scaled-down version. There's at least 5 hours of details on the puppies that isn't showing up here. :)

Technicals
Photoshop CS2
10-16 hours
Wacom Intuos2
No reference (mostly from memory, I have a few buddha statuettes at home and have seen my share of stray puppies...)

Background
The contrast here is the grand, golden Buddha and two tiny puppies - street dogs allowed to roam free at the temple.

The Buddha is in the 'Overcoming Evil' pose, which is also the name of this piece. In this case, the temple is a sanctuary, and the statue looks down upon a curious puppy whose life will be easier now that he (and his sibling) has found a place at the foot of heaven.

Here it is on DA (incase my image isn't showing up)

You have achieved what you aimed for. Very peaceful mood and a lovely painting. Buddha loves puppies!

I love the colors! You're right, the smaller version doesn't do the full version justice. Great piece.

Well worked mood and atmosphere - the positioning of the dogs/candle slightly off centre frm the Buddah works well. Even the notion that the candle is lighting the whole statue seems quite believable, since the statue itself seems to be radiating the glow back.
The puppies are straying towards being cute :p maybe somethiing a little more mange-ridden may have been an option?... but thats just me.

err not that I'm mange-ridden myself you understand - just my taste

Hehe, cute! :)

I just think Buddahs nose has become a tad too sharp, because of the highlight on it. He can cut carrots with that. Okok, a bit absurd, but you know what I mean, dont you? :)

Oh yeah and I think some more shadows over his cheeks could make it more realistic. Look at this example for example. :p

But hey, it got a really calming feeling to it and I love it for that! (B)

Totally agree - Ben! :) The thing with painting a Buddha statue is that these statues aren't anatomically accurate. His face is completely cylindical - the eyes jut out a little farther than the cheeks. And the nose... hmm... I can probably slice a carrot with the Buddha statuette I have at home. *heeheehee*

Thanks for the link - nice!

You really did achieve a nice atmopshere here. Maybe some of the darks could be pushed alittle futher. Other then that very nice piece.

Nice, I'm enjoying the details you have put into this one, and I think you have learned a few tricks in your last work. This is very nice. Don't forget to use darker/stronger shadows and highlights to give the work more depth, good going!

i really like the concept and how the statue seems to be looking down at the puppies.

what i don't think works (in my opinion) is how the light seems to be coming from the candle in the middle and then it seems (from the shadow cast by the statue itself) that the light is coming from the right. I would have put shadows on both sides of the statue giving it a more contrasting feel. dunno.

Thanks for that. Manti! The structure depicted here is a 'house' for the buddha statue. This is common for statues in northern Thailand. They add a grate and a neon/electric lamp at the top so the buddha image gets lit at night. The structure is too small for people to actually spend much time in... I'm guessing it's used to discourage thieves. :)

Interesting :) I really like the gold ornaments in the full size version. It would take a 300 dpi printout to do it justice. Great detail.

*edit* at first I read "overwhelming evil" for some reason and didnt really get the title ^^ Silly me

I love the color pallette of this image! I think you did a beautiful job! Maybe a bit more reflective light down where the candle is on the Buddha image but that's nitpicking! Nice work! :)

Avatar bakatron

nice work pam but you need to do some contouring and volume lighting plus refraction a bit more. if you played with those, itd have more of a 3d feel.

A serenity piece, the soft golds the benevolent Buddha and especially the puppies give it all a soft soothing aura. As some of the above, the buddha's nose is too sharp, looks a bit like razor sharp pressed trousers creases. Otherwise, perfect.
