Description

A Feng is a Phoenix.

This painting utilizes a technique used in traditional Thai Art.

Brief History
Thai Art is best known for its story-telling using lines and colors. The story is told through symbolism and never reveals everything at first glance.

Technicals
Photoshop, freehand painting.
Roughly 12 hours.

The Story
... tells of a phoenix and of life - what it stands for. The bulk of the story is in the wheel of life at the center of the body.

Spreading wings and tail uses the "bodhi branch" pattern. The Bodhi is (in Buddhism) the tree under which the Budha attains enlightenment.

The phoenix is frail, it is fleeting as life is fleeting. But as it goes for all phoenixes, this one will be reborn to tell its tale another day.

Misc
In April, this painting received a Daily Deviation on Deviant Art. I still consider this my favorite work.

I love the phoenix; the colors you used on it reminds me of traditional Asian embroidery work.

However, the background looks like it's just there. Its colors don't suit the phoenix either, particularly the weird yellow blur.

I do agree about the background. Most Thai art of this sort are wall paintings. I was going for shafts of light to sort of symbolize that. I should have darkened the background a bit more, eh?

you should do a colour for the bg that will be in contrast with the phoenix, a violet blue imo
also, it misses some sense of depth...lose the lighting on the bg and try to achieve that using colours and, preferably, darker tones

The phoenix itself is very well made, good amount of details

Great minds think alike -- my original background was violet blue

It ended up looking too harsh so I went with a different colorscheme. The violet blue contradicted the phoenix and swallowed it whole.

this bird story completely like ghoghnos in persian ancient fiction .but your painting of it , is like the other bird in parsian fiction we called simorgh.and it is amazing for me how can be near the civilizations.

Certainly don't see anything like this on a regular basis, and that's a shame because this is fantastic. Gorgeous colors and a stunning amount of detail conspire to make a jaw-dropping piece.

Personally, I find that the simple background suits this, and I really love the color (don't you dare change it!
